Malcolm Thompson Pumps Enhances Water Supply Solutions for a Mining Campsite

In a recent collaboration with a prominent mining company, Malcolm Thompson Pumps (MTP) undertook an essential project of designing, testing, assembling, and commissioning a bespoke pumping solution for a permanent potable water booster station.

Problem

The primary objective was to assist with the debottlenecking initiative at client’s mining site operation, explicitly addressing the expansion of their campsite village. The ambitious expansion plan required a pressurized pumping system capable of efficiently supplying potable water to accommodate an additional 200 individuals.

Solution

MTP’s engineering team took centre stage and leveraged their technical expertise in system analysis and pumping requirements for the campsite. The proposed solution showcased MTP’s commitment to innovation by integrating a Grundfos Hydro MPC-E pressure booster system. This cutting-edge system comprised of four (4) CRIE 5-9 vertical multistage pumps featuring standard stainless-steel suction and discharge manifolds, isolation and check valves, an 80L pressure tank, and an IP65 rated control cabinet. The entire system was rigidly packaged on a standard structural steel base frame equipped with lifting lugs, a sunroof, and an internal batten light.

The Hydro MPC-E system emerged as the ideal choice for this application due to its unique features, including its ability to maintain constant pressure and control through continuously variable adjustment of the speed of each individual pump. Additionally, the system incorporated automatic cascade control of pumps to maintain optimum efficiency, highlighting MTP’s commitment to employing state-of-the-art solutions.

Result

The post-installation, on-site testing, and commissioning process showcased the permanent potable water booster station’s exceptional reliability. The system seamlessly met the variable demand for potable water, providing uninterrupted supply to the newly expanded 200-person campsite.

The success story underscores MTP’s commitment to delivering tailored and efficient engineering solutions for our client’s unique challenges, which not only met but exceeded the expectations of the debottlenecking initiative at our client’s mining site’s operation. This case exemplifies MTP’s capacity to innovate, engineer, and execute solutions that impact our clients’ operations.
